TEN years ago in Witton Park, near Bishop Auckland, a statue entitled The Ball and the Bradford Boy was erected in a new memorial garden to commemorate the achievements of George and Roland Bradford, who were born in the village. They became the only brothers to be awarded the Victoria Cross in the First World War, Roland winning his for his extraordinary achievements during the Battle of the Somme, as we tell on Page 20.
